Answer: It refers to stinking smell coming out of HVAC. The dirty socks syndrome is caused by the simple growth of mold and bacteria on the coil of the air conditioner. Moreover, water and organic debris in the drain pan that results in a fertile garden of microorganisms also contributes to this smell. The best remedy is to get the coil cleaned or entire system professionally cleaned. Mold and bacteria can be killed in HVAC systems by using UVC light in the bacteria-prone areas.
